Process

In the summer of 2014, I was preparing for a fall exhibition at Ana Serratosa Arte in Valencia, Spain. At the time, my wife and I were renting out a floor in our Boston house to a young filmmaker, Anthony Penta. Upon becoming familiar with my work, Anthony suggested making a short documentary of my studio process. I agreed, and we began our weekly sessions—each time focusing on a new stage of the dozen or so works in progress. He soon discovered the challenges of filming in a sweaty, dusty, and, at times, toxic environment. Unscripted, he would prompt me with perceptive questions and always seemed to be in sync with my work rhythm. Many hours of filming led to many hours of editing. When he unveiled the final draft, I was blown away by how artfully and succinctly (only 8:20 minutes!) he had captured my studio process. Apparently, the judges at the 2015 New England Emmy Awards felt the same way and awarded Anthony an Emmy.
